A Newly Identified Skarn Mineralization in the Yolindi Area, Biga Peninsula, NW Turkey: New Evidence From Micochemical and Stable Isotope Data

Between 2020 and 2023, Mustafa Kaya's doctoral dissertation, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kumral and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amr Abdelnasser Ali Khalil, provides a significant exploration of the Yolindi Fe-Cu Skarn Deposit in the Biga Peninsula, Çanakkale. This work is noteworthy for its innovative exploration of the skarn mineralization related to the Şaroluk granitoid intrusion, a previously unexplored aspect. By using a comprehensive approach involving mineralogical, geochemical, and isotopic methods, this research elucidates the genesis and progressive evolution of Cu-Fe skarn mineralization within the region. Therefore, this study provides an important contribution to the current knowledge in this field of research.

Industry-Academy-Student Meetings were held on Octover 24-25 at ITU Faculty of Mines İhsan Ketin Conference Hall. Türkiye-Mongolia Joint Project on the Palaeoseismology and Tectonic Geomorphology of the Western Gobi-Altay Shear Zone

Central Asia has been the subject to many studies from ITU for at least four decades. Ideas on not only the tectonic evolution, but also a new type of orogenic growth, named as ‘the Turkic type orogeny’, have been developed for this particular region also known as ‘Altaids’.The successful dating of palaeoevents along the Western Bogd and Valley of Lakes faults ın Central Asıa will contribute to our knowledge on the spatio-temporal seismic behaviour of these active tectonic structures.

The Rare Earth Elements (REE) are considered critical metals, due to their widespread use in many ‘‘green’’ technologies, such as renewable energy production and distribution, hybrid and electric vehicles, consumer electronics, imaging technologies in healthcare. For this reason, REE are becoming more attractive commodity targets for the mineral industry.

31st ITU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Seminar and Exhibition

This year the ITU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering department hosted the 31st ITU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Seminar and Exhibition. The event was held through the dates of June 30 – July 1, 2022 in the Faculty of Mines at Istanbul Technical University. The event started off with the opening session where we had the privilege of hosting the president of GazBir, Mr. Yaşar Arslan, the president of the Chamber of Petroleum Engineers, Mr. Yüksel Kurt and president and CEO of Turkish Petroleum, Mr. Melih Han Bilgin.

In 2022 particularly our early career researchers from the Departments of Mining, Geological, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Geophysical, and Mineral Processing Engineering introduced findings from their completed/ongoing works within weekly organized online faculty seminars.

New Developments in Geosciences Are in This Book

The book series entitled "Advances in Geological Science" that reveal new developments in geophysics owing to the advances in geosciences, especially in data collection and data processing has taken its place in the world of science. Our faculty member Prof. Dr. Tuncay Taymaz from the Department of Geophysical Engineering are among the editors of the book series together with Prof. Dr. Junzo Kasahara from Tokyo and Shizuoka Universities and Prof. Dr. Michael Zhdanov from University of Utah.
