Pioneering Collaboration with Konya Technical University: TÜBİTAK-Funded Research on Geological Carbon Storage

A multi-disciplinary collaboration between the Istanbul Technical University Department of Geological Engineering and Konya Technical University Department of Chemistry and Chemical Processing Technologies was initiated to anticipate a major impact on future developments in carbon storage technology and the development of carbon-zero facilities.

A 6-Month Anomaly was Detected in Spring Waters Before the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes

In a study carried out within the scope of the ITU-BAP Rapid Support project no. 44774, chemical anomalies were detected in the spring waters before the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. The study was completed by Prof.Dr. Sedat Inan and Dr. Nurettin Yakupoğlu from the ITU Department of Geological Engineering, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Hasan Çetin from Çukurova University.

Faculty Seminar Series

In 2023 particularly our early career researchers from the Departments of Mining, Geological, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Geophysical, and Mineral Processing Engineering introduced findings from their completed/ongoing works within weekly organized online faculty seminars.

New Developments in Geosciences Are in This Book

The book series entitled "Advances in Geological Science" that reveal new developments in geophysics owing to the advances in geosciences, especially in data collection and data processing has taken its place in the world of science. Our faculty member Prof. Dr. Tuncay Taymaz from the Department of Geophysical Engineering are among the editors of the book series together with Prof. Dr. Junzo Kasahara from Tokyo and Shizuoka Universities and Prof. Dr. Michael Zhdanov from University of Utah.

YER 2023

YER2023 symposium was held online on June 19th 2023. During this event, our senior undergraduate students shared the outcomes of their design projects that they conducted under the supervision of their thesis advisors with the scientific community.

2023 ITU Academic Performance Awards

The second ITU Academic Performance Awards took place on 18 May. A total of 14 academics from the Faculty of Mines were awarded in two categories, academic performance and publications.

Recent Point of Care (PoC) Electrochemical Testing Trends of New Diagnostics Platforms for Vitamin D

A recent study published at the ChemistrySelect by Assoc. Prof. Birgül Benli from the Department of Mineral Processing Engineering, with contributions from graduate student Mervenur Kirazoğlu from the Program of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering highlights the recent progress in electrochemical sensors for detecting vitamin D, emphasizing their simplicity and high sensitivity.

Recovery of Precious Metals from End-Of-Life Mobile Phone Lithium-Ion Batteries

Under the leadership of Assoc. Dr. Fırat Burat from the Department of Mineral Processing Engineering, within the scope of the GAP project titled "Recovery Of Precious Metals From End-Of-Life Mobile Phone Lithium-Ion Batteries", the recovery of strategically valuable raw materials in the composition of mobile phone lithium-ion batteries is being investigated.

32nd ITU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Seminar and Exhibition

This year the ITU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering department hosted the 32nd ITU Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Seminar and Exhibition. The event was held through the dates of June 22 – June 23, 2023 in the Faculty of Mines at Istanbul Technical University. The event started off with the opening session where we had the privilege of hosting the faculty dean, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kumral, the president of the Chamber of Petroleum Engineers, Mr. İnanç Alptuğ Hıdıroğlu and the president and CEO of Turkish Petroleum, Mr. Melih Han Bilgin.

Digitalization in Mining

A project focusing on Digitalization in Mining industry has been granted by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBİTAK). It consists of HaywireAI software system (established by Assoc. Prof. Dr. C. Atilla Öztürk of the Mining Engineering Department), which includes the 3D design of the ore model, underground support design, mapping of the ore model through image processing and machine learning, production of 3D geological and ore models based on vectoral data, and development of artificial intelligence-based smart inspection systems to detect and prevent erroneous and inconsistent data entries during the collection of geological and geotechnical data.
