Pioneer Disaster Resilience Studies at the ITU: Prof. Dr. Nilgun Okay from the Department of Geological Engineering was ranked at the top of the list regarding the Most Publishing Researchers on Social Sciences among all engineering departments of the ITU

After the 1999 earthquake, Turkey began to develop a modern disaster and emergency management system. The Marmara region, home to 70% of the country's population and 75% of its industrial facilities, is at risk of a major earthquake at any time. There are serious concerns that Turkey is not prepared for a catastrophic event. There is an inefficient use of disaster risk reduction, resulting in low awareness and lack of action at the local level. This is the main challenge in reducing vulnerability.

The international Conference on “6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes”, Organized with the Cooperation of ITU, UNESCO and IPRED, Brought Together Experts

During the international conference organized with the cooperation of ITU, UNESCO, and IPRED, our faculty member, Professor Dr. Tuncay Taymaz, has been appointed to the scientific committee where he will contribute to the academic discussion. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Taymaz is actively involved in the local organizing committee to the conference's success and effective coordination.

Pioneering Collaboration with Konya Technical University: TÜBİTAK-Funded Research on Geological Carbon Storage

A multi-disciplinary collaboration between the Istanbul Technical University Department of Geological Engineering and Konya Technical University Department of Chemistry and Chemical Processing Technologies was initiated to anticipate a major impact on future developments in carbon storage technology and the development of carbon-zero facilities.

A 6-Month Anomaly was Detected in Spring Waters Before the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes

In a study carried out within the scope of the ITU-BAP Rapid Support project no. 44774, chemical anomalies were detected in the spring waters before the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. The study was completed by Prof.Dr. Sedat Inan and Dr. Nurettin Yakupoğlu from the ITU Department of Geological Engineering, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Hasan Çetin from Çukurova University.

New Developments in Geosciences Are in This Book

The book series entitled "Advances in Geological Science" that reveal new developments in geophysics owing to the advances in geosciences, especially in data collection and data processing has taken its place in the world of science. Our faculty member Prof. Dr. Tuncay Taymaz from the Department of Geophysical Engineering are among the editors of the book series together with Prof. Dr. Junzo Kasahara from Tokyo and Shizuoka Universities and Prof. Dr. Michael Zhdanov from University of Utah.

YER 2023

YER2023 symposium was held online on June 19th 2023. During this event, our senior undergraduate students shared the outcomes of their design projects that they conducted under the supervision of their thesis advisors with the scientific community.

2023 ITU Academic Performance Awards

The second ITU Academic Performance Awards took place on 18 May. A total of 14 academics from the Faculty of Mines were awarded in two categories, academic performance and publications.

Recent Point of Care (PoC) Electrochemical Testing Trends of New Diagnostics Platforms for Vitamin D

A recent study published at the ChemistrySelect by Assoc. Prof. Birgül Benli from the Department of Mineral Processing Engineering, with contributions from graduate student Mervenur Kirazoğlu from the Program of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering highlights the recent progress in electrochemical sensors for detecting vitamin D, emphasizing their simplicity and high sensitivity.

Recovery of Precious Metals from End-Of-Life Mobile Phone Lithium-Ion Batteries

Under the leadership of Assoc. Dr. Fırat Burat from the Department of Mineral Processing Engineering, within the scope of the GAP project titled "Recovery Of Precious Metals From End-Of-Life Mobile Phone Lithium-Ion Batteries", the recovery of strategically valuable raw materials in the composition of mobile phone lithium-ion batteries is being investigated.
