Prof. Dr. Ali Mehmet Celâl Şengör, retired faculty member of the Department of Geological Engineering at the Faculty of Mines, Istanbul Technical University, has been awarded the 2025 Akiho Miyashiro Award by the Geological Society of Japan in recognition of his contributions to geological research and the history of science.

The award is being presented in honor of Prof. Dr. Şengör’s multilingual and historical syntheses on the orogeny and tectonic evolution of Eurasia, as well as his original analyses that have had a significant impact on the global scientific community. His work on orogenic processes within the framework of plate tectonics has also influenced Japanese geologists, contributing to a re-evaluation of Japan’s geological structure. In addition, his academic interactions with the Japanese geoscience community were specifically emphasized in the award citation.

The award ceremony will be held on September 14, 2025, at the Faculty of Engineering, Kumamoto University, in Kumamoto, Japan. Prof. Dr. Şengör is expected to attend the commemorative event scheduled for the same evening and deliver a 30-minute honorary lecture during the ceremony.

As part of the Akiho Miyashiro Award, he will be presented with a certificate and a medal. In the official invitation letter signed by Prof. Atsuhi Yamaji, President of the Geological Society of Japan, Prof. Dr. Şengör’s contributions were praised not only in the field of geology but also in the broader context of the history of science.
