On April 23, 2025, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred off the coast of Silivri in the Marmara Sea. In the immediate aftermath of the event, a group of experts organized by İTU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal including the Dean of Faculty of Mines, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kumral, Prof. Dr. Cenk Yaltırak, Prof. Dr. Seda Yolsal-Çevikbilen, and Associate. Prof. Dr. Tuna Eken from the ITU Faculty of Mines contributed to a live broadcast on YouTube providing an initial seismic assessment that has mainly aimed to inform and guide the public during the critical early hours.
In addition to their real-time communication, the team also prepared a publicly available preliminary report, presenting key findings and initial interpretations based on scientific observations and data analyses. The report aims to support both public awareness and decision-making processes in disaster risk management. The preliminary report includes maps, graphs and charts under the subheadings of location of mainshock and aftershock distributions, active fault distribution in the region, Strong Ground Movements and Impact Areas, and Kumburgaz Fault Stress Assessment. This timely and informative response once again underscores the strong commitment of the Faculty of Mines to public service, scientific transparency, and active engagement in societal risk communication, in particular, in the face of natural disasters that affect our communities.
