The international conference on “6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes”, organized with the cooperation of Istanbul Technical University (ITU), UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and IPRED (International Platform for Reducing Earthquake Disaster) at the Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center in ITU Ayazağa Campus on September 27, 2023, featured scientific talks on the social consequences of the earthquakes and suggested solutions.
In the opening session, UNESCO representative Abou Amani and Japan’s Ambassador to Türkiye Takahiko Katsumata took part with video speeches, while our Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak Ata delivered an opening speech in which she mentioned the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Structural and Earthquake Engineering Laboratory at ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering, which undertook the organization of the conference, and underlined the scientific efforts of this laboratory that was established at ITU after the 1993 Erzincan Earthquake to reduce the social impact of earthquakes.
At the UNESCO-IPRED conference which included many participants from Algeria, Chile, Egypt, El Salvador, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Peru, Romania, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Türkiye, technical findings, field experiences and the consequences of the earthquake were discussed.
