ITU Faculty of Mines Recognized Among the World’s Best in QS Subject Rankings

The Faculty of Mines at Istanbul Technical University (İTU) continues to reinforce its reputation as a global center of excellence in engineering and earth sciences. According to the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject, İTÜ’s engineering disciplines,particularly those under the Faculty of Mines, have achieved exceptional positions among the top institutions worldwide.

The Faculty of Mines at Istanbul Technical University (İTU) continues to reinforce its reputation as a global center of excellence in engineering and earth sciences. According to the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject, İTÜ’s engineering disciplines—particularly those under the Faculty of Mines—have achieved exceptional positions among the top institutions worldwide.

Highlights from the latest QS results include:

  • Engineering – Petroleum: Ranked #40 globally
  • Engineering – Mineral & Mining: Ranked #44 globally
  • Natural Sciences – Geology & Geophysics: Placed in the 151–200 global band

These rankings reflect not only the academic strength of İTÜ’s departments but also the university’s strategic focus on research output, employer reputation, and international collaboration. The Faculty of Mines, one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering faculties in Türkiye, continues to pioneer innovations in the fields of resource extraction, energy systems, and geoscience.

The Faculty of Mines was established in 1953 in Istanbul. At its first years, the faculty composed of mainly Turkish and German professors, and its program was similar to those days’ famous mining schools such as Aachen, Clausthal and Freiberg.

Today, the Faculty of Mines with five departments (Mining, Geological, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Geophysical, and Mineral Processing Engineering) and 13 sub-divisions is graduating young and proficient engineers to search, develop and produce underground sources of Turkey.
