A project focusing on Digitalization in Mining industry has been granted by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBİTAK). It consists of HaywireAI software system (established by Assoc. Prof. Dr. C. Atilla Öztürk of the Mining Engineering Department), which includes the 3D design of the ore model, underground support design, mapping of the ore model through image processing and machine learning, production of 3D geological and ore models based on vectoral data, and development of artificial intelligence-based smart inspection systems to detect and prevent erroneous and inconsistent data entries during the collection of geological and geotechnical data.

HaywireAI is a software system currently being developed by CASK Software Technology and Mining Company, established by Assoc. Prof. Dr. C. Atilla Öztürk, a faculty member of the Mining Engineering Department at Istanbul Technical University, and Mining Engineer Şansal Kantarcı. The project has been granted by TÜBİTAK as of 1507 program. The software system includes the 3D design of the ore model, underground support design, mapping of the ore model through image processing and machine learning, production of 3D geological and ore models based on vectoral data, and development of artificial intelligence-based smart inspection systems to detect and prevent erroneous and inconsistent data entries during the collection of geological and geotechnical data. The project also involves the creation of machine learning models using datasets formed from matched photo/verified vector data pairs and lidar data obtained in the field, and equipping the system with the capability of automatic mapping through photo/image analysis. This will serve to automate human-centric processes, enhance job safety, and minimize accidents due to human error.

CASK has been growing successfully since its establishing in 2019 from the academic consultants as well as the engineers at ITU to increase the products ranges that should encourage people for innovative researches.

The Faculty of Mines was established in 1953 in Istanbul. At its first years, the faculty composed of mainly Turkish and German professors, and its program was similar to those days’ famous mining schools such as Aachen, Clausthal and Freiberg.

Today, the Faculty of Mines with five departments (Mining, Geological, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Geophysical, and Mineral Processing Engineering) and 13 sub-divisions is graduating young and proficient engineers to search, develop and produce underground sources of Turkey.
