The ¨Water in Istanbul Project¨ Introduced to the World

The ¨Water in Istanbul Project¨, jointly carried out by the British Institute in Ankara (BIAA), Istanbul Technical University, Edinburgh University, and Northumbria University, was presented to the world at an international symposium entitled ¨Water in Istanbul and Beyond: Past, Present and Future" at Taşkışla on March 14, 2023.

The ¨Water in Istanbul Project¨, jointly carried out by the British Institute in Ankara (BIAA), Istanbul Technical University, Edinburgh University, and Northumbria University, was presented to the world at an international symposium entitled ¨Water in Istanbul and Beyond: Past, Present and Future" at Taşkışla on March 14, 2023.

Lutgarde Vandeput, the project coordinator from BIAA, ITU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Şule Itır Satoğlu, İSKİ General Manager Şafak Başa, and Kate Greary, the Deputy Consul General of the United Kingdom in Istanbul, delivered opening speeches at the symposium. The symposium focused on the cisterns and arches built during The Byzantine period to supply water to Istanbul, ancient practices in other geographies, and historical water management. In addition, discussions centered on issues such as water security in Turkey's agricultural lands.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Caner İmren and R.A. Beril Karadöller from the Department of Geophysical Engineering of Istanbul Technical University, who carried out geophysical studies to identify the water structures in and around the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, gave invited speeches at the event.

The Faculty of Mines was established in 1953 in Istanbul. At its first years, the faculty composed of mainly Turkish and German professors, and its program was similar to those days’ famous mining schools such as Aachen, Clausthal and Freiberg.

Today, the Faculty of Mines with five departments (Mining, Geological, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Geophysical, and Mineral Processing Engineering) and 13 sub-divisions is graduating young and proficient engineers to search, develop and produce underground sources of Turkey.
