Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre Artun of the Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering initiates artificial intelligence-based research dealing with Reservoir Characterization, Performance Forecasting and Field Development Planning.

A 10-month R&D project titled “Investigation of Applicability of Machine Learning to Reservoir Characterization, Performance Forecasting and Field Development Planning” has been initiated. The project’s principal investigator is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre Artun and the project is funded by Turkish Petroleum. The project aims to improve the reservoir characterization of an oil field that has been operated by Turkish Petroleum using available field data, and to forecast the performance of new well locations only by using real data without the need for higher-fidelity models. The ultimate goal is to design field-development scenarios by identifying “sweet-spots” in the reservoir.

The Faculty of Mines was established in 1953 in Istanbul. At its first years, the faculty composed of mainly Turkish and German professors, and its program was similar to those days’ famous mining schools such as Aachen, Clausthal and Freiberg.

Today, the Faculty of Mines with five departments (Mining, Geological, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Geophysical, and Mineral Processing Engineering) and 13 sub-divisions is graduating young and proficient engineers to search, develop and produce underground sources of Turkey.
