9th International Geochemistry Symposium

9th International Geochemistry symposium that was held between 17-20 October 2022 in Didim, western Türkiye within the leadership of our faculty members Professor Mustafa Kumral and Professor Emin Çiftçi (On behalf of the Organizing Committee) have brought distinguished scientists on the field of Geochemistry and Geology from different national and international institutes. In this regard the event provided a strong atmosphere, particularly for, young research candidates and early career scientists to follow recent advancements in the geochemistry.

More detailed information about this symposium can be found at  https://www.9thgeochemistry.com/en/history/

AIPEA – XVII International Clay Conference (17th ICC 2022)

The International Clay Conference (ICC) takes place every four years. The most recent edition, the 17th such conference, was held at the Hilton İstanbul Maslak, from 25–29 July 2022, a collaborative effort between The Clay Science Society (Turkey) and The Clay Minerals Society (USA).

THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE of AIPEA – XVII INTERNATIONAL CLAY CONFERENCE (17th ICC 2022)

• Selahattin Kadir (Conference General Chair, Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Turkey)
• Paul A. Schroeder (Conference Co-Chair University of Georgia, United States)
• Asuman Günal Türkmenoğlu (AIPEA Representative of the 17th ICC, Middle East Technical University, Turkey)
• Fahri Esenli (Secretary, İstanbul Technical University, İstanbul, Turkey)
• Emin Çiftçi (Secretary, İstanbul Technical University, İstanbul, Turkey)

The scientific program of the 17th ICC, 2022, brought together scientists and researchers from 40 countries with many varied disciplines related to clays and clay minerals. In addition to the oral and poster presentations, eight plenary lectures were delivered. The total number of attendees at the Conference was 323 (191 in person and 132 online). A total of 294 papers (228 oral and 66 posters) were presented.

The scientific aspect of the event commenced with a Clay Minerals Society workshop lecture series, led by George Christidis, on the topic “Advances in the Characterization of Smectite in Bentonites”. This was held at İstanbul Technical University Campus on Saturday 23rd July. 27 participants attended. The 1-day field trip ‘Şile Clay Deposits’ took place on July 30, 2022, organized by Orhan Yavuz, Paul A. Schroeder, Emin Çiftçi, and Hüseyin Demir. The geologic background of Şile clays, their chemistry and mineralogy and surrounding rocks, and their evaluation for porcelain, tile, sanitary, and tableware production were explained at the site.

4th Engineering Geology and Geotechnics Symposium, ENGGEO’2021

The 4th Engineering Geology and Geotechnics Symposium “ENGGEO'2021” that is planned to be organized in every two years by Turkish Society for Engineering Geology “MuhJeoDer” was held on June 2-4, 2022 at the Suleyman Demirel Cultural Center of Istanbul Technical University Ayazağa Campus this year due to the Covid Pandemic.

The MUHJEO'2021 Symposium, organized and conducted at the national level, aimed at identifying ground features and conditions, investigating and explaining their strength and behavior, and sharing engineering geology and geotechnical studies in a scientific environment, which form the basis for planning, projecting and executing all kinds of interactions with the earth's crust. In the symposium, it is aimed to present, discuss, share the findings with technical and scientific data obtained from the researches carried out for implementation at national and international level and to bring together academicians, researchers, engineers, members of the implementing institutions and students working in this field on the same platform.

Mühjeo'2021 Symposium Program included 1 Invited Speech, 56 Oral and 12 Poster Presentations. Sessions of the Symposium have been organized on main topics such as Engineering Geology in Planning and Design Stage, Geomechanics, Geodynamic Processes, Underground Opening, Urban and Environmental Geology, Geophysical Methods in Engineering Geology, Engineering Characteristics of Rocks and Floors, Engineering Geology in The Protection of Historical Structures, Mass Movement, Hydrogeology in Engineering Applications, Geotechnical Measurement and Monitoring Techniques, Water Retention Structures, Hazard and Risk and Natural Building Materials.

Organizing Committee sincerely thanks the people, institutions and organizations that participated and contributed to the symposium despite the severe pandemic conditions that have turned into a disaster on our planet, and wishes that this meeting in a scientific festive atmosphere will be productive, useful and enjoyable for the participants.

The Faculty of Mines was established in 1953 in Istanbul. At its first years, the faculty composed of mainly Turkish and German professors, and its program was similar to those days’ famous mining schools such as Aachen, Clausthal and Freiberg.

Today, the Faculty of Mines with five departments (Mining, Geological, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Geophysical, and Mineral Processing Engineering) and 13 sub-divisions is graduating young and proficient engineers to search, develop and produce underground sources of Turkey.
