Istanbul Technical University has once again ranked first among Turkish universities in the “World’s Most Influential Scientists 2024” list, prepared annually by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier. With the highest number of academics from Türkiye represented in both the Annual Impact and Career-Long Impact categories, ITU continues to demonstrate its strong and sustained contribution to global scientific research.
According to the official results, 64 ITU academics were included in the Annual Impact category, which highlights researchers with significant influence based on recent scientific output, while 80 academics were featured in the Career-Long Impact category, recognizing long-term and sustained scientific contribution. The rankings are based on objective scientometric indicators such as publication volume, citation counts, h-index, and field-weighted impact metrics.
A significant share of this success was achieved by academics from the ITU Faculty of Mines. Faculty members from the departments of Geological Engineering, Geophysical Engineering, Mineral Processing Engineering, and Mining Engineering were recognized for their high-impact research in earth sciences, mineral resources, and mining technologies, contributing both to recent scientific advances and to long-standing international knowledge production.
From the Faculty of Mines, the following academics (in alphabethical order) were included in the World’s Most Influential Scientists list in the Annual Impact and/or Career-Long Impact categories:
Prof. Dr. Aral Okay (Geological Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Ataç Başçetin (Mining Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Aykut Barka (Geological Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Celâl Şengör (Geological Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Feridun Boylu (Mineral Processing Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Gülay Bulut (Mineral Processing Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Gündüz Ateşok (Mineral Processing Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Keskin (Geological Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Sabri Çelik (Mineral Processing Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Nuh Bilgin (Mining Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Orhan Özdemir (Mineral Processing Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Tuncay Taymaz (Geophysical Engineering)
Prof. Dr. Yücel Yılmaz (Geological Engineering)
Academics from Geological Engineering were recognized for their influential work on tectonics, regional geology, and the evolution of the Earth’s crust, while contributions from Geophysical Engineering, particularly in seismology and seismotectonics, have had strong international visibility. Research conducted in Mineral Processing Engineering has contributed to sustainable and innovative processing technologies, and Mining Engineering studies have advanced knowledge in excavation methods, rock mechanics, and modern mining systems.
The strong presence of Faculty of Mines academics in both impact categories highlights the faculty’s long-standing research tradition, interdisciplinary approach, and international scientific engagement. This achievement not only enhances the global visibility of the Faculty of Mines but also serves as a source of inspiration for young researchers and students.
The ITU Faculty of Mines congratulates all its distinguished academics who were featured in the World’s Most Influential Scientists 2024 list and wishes them continued success in their scientific endeavors.
